Here's what National Weather Service forecasters are predicting for more than 30 counties in Lower Michigan.


➤ West Michigan, where 4-6 inches of snow is expected beginning 1 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.

➤ Tri-Cities area, Shiawassee and Livingston counties, where 4-6 inches is expected; highest snowfall rates anticipated Wednesday afternoon; peak snowfall rates of greater than a half-inch per hour, expected between 4-11 p.m. Wednesday, with highest snowfall expected east of M-24. The weather service warns "travel could be very difficult."

➤ Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties, with 2-4 inches of snow, which will turn to freezing rain mainly south of I-94; ice amounts up to 0.1 inches with highest totals toward the Ohio border.


A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for these areas:


➤ The Thumb-Flint area and Huron, Sanilac and Tuscola counties could see snowfall between 5-8 inches, with highest amounts toward the Lake Huron shore.

➤ For northern Lower Michigan, including Alpena, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac, 5-8 inches is possible.


➤ Southern counties could see 2-4 inches of snow and minor ice.


➤ The watch includes the I-75, I-69, I-94, I-696 areas.


➤ South of I-94 may see a wintry mix that includes freezing rain.


Temperatures are expected in the 20s through Friday.

You will have an easy time going to work Wednesday, but coming home could be a mess in Metro Detroit.

Overnight, it will be calm and cold, with lows in the upper teens.

The morning commute Thursday looks just fine with cloudy skies and dry conditions.

Here is the latest storm timeline:

  • Between 1 p.m.- 5 p.m., snow begins moving into the area Wednesday
  • 5 p.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday is when the heaviest snow falls, and it will accumulate
  • 3 a.m. - 8 a.m. Thursday, snow showers continue with slippery roads and lots of snow to shovel.

Weekend forecast

Another round of snow moves in on Saturday and looks to be similar in snow totals or perhaps even greater.

Next week

Then very cold air settles in next week with single-digit lows early in the week.

A winter storm is expected to bring up to 8 inches of snow to parts of lower Michigan on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A storm watch was issued Monday for more than 40 counties across the state, with predictions of 5-8 inches of accumulation for Macomb and Oakland counties, as well as in Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac, Alpena, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac counties.

Less snow, in the 4- to 6-inch range, was expected for Midland, Bay, Saginaw, Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Oceana, Newaygo, Mecosta, Isabella, Muskegon, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Jackson, Van Buren, Shiawassee and Livingston counties.

Wayne, Lenawee, Monroe and Washtenaw counties were forecast to get 2-4 inches.
